The VCU Rams (9-3, 2-1 Atlantic 10) will face the George Washington Colonials (3-7, 2-13) in Washington on Wednesday, Jan. -1 Atlantic 10). Tipping is set for 2 p.m. ET at the Charles E. Smith Center.

George Washington may be a little out of place when he comes home on that A-10 slope. Since splitting a home two-game series with Duquesne’s New Years weekend, the Colonials have postponed games against UMass and St. Bonaventure due to a curfew across the district following the U.S. Capitol siege and a positive COVID-19 test by a program staff / p> It’s no surprise that the Rams are favored over the rested – but possibly rusty – colonial rulers.

VCU was selected to finish ninth in the pre-season A-10 poll. But the Rams are currently the third highest team (60th) at the conference, according to KenPom, just behind St. Louis (# 30) and preseason favorite Richmond (# 51).

That was last time Head coach Mike Rhoades’ team tied Rhode Island at 54 points apiece for the second half of Saturday until URI ran a 17-4 run which turned out to be the difference.

Bones Hyland had a game high of 24 points (of which 19 in the second half) but it wasn’t enough for the VCU to win their eighth in a row.

Before the 15-point loss to Rhode Island, the Rhoades group had ripped seven in a row longest run since the end of the 2018/19 regular season with twelve in a row.

This is a program that is not only used to winning, but also winning on the big stage. Starting with the memorable Final Four run in 2011, the Rams have made the NCAA tournament eight of the last nine times, falling below the 25-victory plateau only twice (VCU ended up with 18 wins in 2018 and 2020 when there was none Tournament gave) this period.

VCU then gave no. 15 West Virginia was a competitive game with a 78-66 defeat on Thanksgiving Day and less than a week later on December 2, losing just under 72-69 at Penn State. Before Saturday’s defeat, those were the only two mistakes in the Rams’ ledger. I don’t see the Colonials giving them Loss # 4 on Wednesday.

If GW has a chance in this case, it’s because the tandem with the best results of the James Bishop and Jamison Battle team went to the Use comes. Bishop, a second security guard from Baltimore, hit the three winners in the Colonials’ 75-73 win against Duquesne on January 3rd.

He averages a team high of 19.7 points per game and distributes a team high of 6, 1 assists per game.

In order not to be outdone, his colleague reached a career high of 29 points against the Dukes in his second year. The 6-foot-7 striker brings up 18.4 points per night. Throw in 6-foot-9 senior Matthew Moyer, who averaged double-doubles averaging 10.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game this season, and this group has real talent. Whether or not they can slow down a guy nicknamed Bones remains to be seen.

It’s easy to run out of superlatives when describing Hyland’s game. He leads the Rams with 18.2 points a night and has led them with points nine times this season. Born in Wilmington from Delaware, he has earned at least 20 points five times and scored 30 or more points twice this season. Needless to say, he’s explosive.

Hyland was a third-team all-conference player last season and, like the rest of his teammates, has beaten those early awards. With Hyland in a groove, it’s hard to see him going the underdog’s path.

KenPom predicts the competition on Wednesday will be a 10-point VCU win (77-67 to be precise according to the website). Because of Hyland’s hot hand and possibly sluggish colonial rulers due to recent inactivity, I love VCU at this point.
