The hit quiz show started in 1998, but it took two years for someone to win the grand prize – and that person was former garden designer Judith Keppel, who died on Jan.. Walked away November 25th, 2020 with the £ 1 million she apparently « fought for » money « prior to appearing on the show. Keppel has remained a familiar face to TV quiz enthusiasts since joining the Eggheads cast in 2003.
It was only five months before a second millionaire was on the show. Former Welsh physics teacher and 1990 mastermind champion David Edwards responded on Jan.. April 2001 all 15 questions correct. Edwards used all three of his lifelines for one question – the 125. 000 pound question – and his son, who later turned 125 himself. Won 000 pounds on the show when his friend. After his victory, Edwards almost followed Keppel’s path on Eggheads – in two series of Are You an Egghead? However, in 2008 and 2009 he failed to win on either occasion.
The next candidate to win the award was also in 2001. Oxford-trained banker Robert Brydges became the third millionaire in the show’s history. The win came at an eventful time for the show – just 11 days after the Coughing Major scandal, and Brydges happened to be in the audience during Charles Ingram’s appearance, reportedly one of the few to notice anything suspicious.
After Brydges won, there was a break of almost three years until the next millionaire. Irish quiz world champion Pat Gibson finally ended the drought on Jan.. April 2004. Gibson is firmly established in the world of quiz shows, having won Mastermind in 2005 and Radio 4’s Brain 4 in 2006. Like Edwards did Gibson take part in both the first and second series of Are You on Egghead? and beat his fellow millionaire in the 2009 finals to join the Eggheads team.
Perhaps no name in the history of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire was as prominent as Ingram – and on Jan.. September 2006 official Ingram Wilcox became the fifth grand prize winner and the last millionaire in the original series. Wilcox was previously a losing finalist on a slew of quiz shows, including Mastermind, Fifteen to One and Brain of Britain. He answered the last question correctly, having already used all three of his lifelines.
£ 1 million Question: Which boxer was famous for hitting the gong in the introduction to J Arthur Rank films?
It took another contestant 14 years to become a millionaire – though it’s worth noting that the show didn’t air between 2014 and 2018. History and politics teacher Donald Fear was the first winner of Jeremy Clarkson’s tenure as host earlier this year, winning on Jan.. September 2020 the main prize. His victory was all the more impressive as he was the first to win without using all available lifelines – in fact, he only used one, the 50:50 at 32. 000 pound question.
£ 1 million Question: Which pirate died in the battle off the coast of what is now North Carolina in 1718?
