Andy Little assumes that Rangers will take advantage of it after Alfredo Morelos finally grows up.
The Colombian striker looked set on the Ibrox exit door after a summer full of speculation and a bad start to the season.
But he did his best and established himself as an important part of Steven Gerrard’s ardent Rangers squad.
Little, who scored 33 goals in Govan for six years, believes Morelos is nearing his best. He said: « Alfredo’s game has come to a real maturity this season and he seems to understand what the team needs from him.
“From a disciplinary point of view, he has tightened up and is doing more work outside of the framework than ever before. He has a job to do by putting the ball in the back of the net, but he has evolved as a player and added more to his game.
“You have about 200 internationals between you and Alfredo bullied you on your own field. I didn’t want to see Morelos leave at the beginning of the season and I definitely don’t want him to leave now because he’s in top form right now.
« He had that little sterile spell that every striker goes through. Steven Gerrard himself has said he doesn’t know why Alfredo hasn’t scored so many goals this season.
“Do I think Rangers would be fine if he left? Possibly, but I’d rather see him chasing the championship title. ”
After showing up at Ibrox with a goal against Celtic in 2012, Little is aware of the pressure Morelos is under.
He insists that Steven Gerrard is the man he needs to thank for getting the star striker back on track.
Little said, « The most impressive thing is how management has treated him because there is no doubt his head was turned over the summer. He’s been affiliated with massive clubs so that’s only natural.
“Steven Gerrard and some of the older players have gathered around him and turned their heads back to Rangers.
« He wasn’t fit at the start of the season and didn’t look nearly as focused as he did last season. It is difficult for a manager to put such a player in the background again.
“It is also thanks to Alfredo that he is playing with the right mentality again, but management played a major role there. There are a lot more players taking responsibility for getting the ball into the net and that is something Steven Gerrard called for.
« You can’t just rely on Alfredo to score all of your goals. But if the Rangers keep playing as they are and Morelos gets into the box, he’ll meet Sitter all season. ”
