This is Sportstars Spielblog / Highlights of the ISL 2020-21 game between Odisha FC and Chennaiyin FC at the GMC stadium in Bambolim.

CFC manager Csaba Laszlo: I told my players that we have to end the chances we create in order to win games and reach the playoffs. And that’s exactly what they did in the first half. Kudos to Odisha, they gave us an uphill battle. I am very happy with the three points. I made a huge mistake when I brought (Deepak) Tangri in very late. Otherwise we would have defended better in the second half. We had to play deep and control the game from there because we were leading. (Lallianzuala) Chhangte had two chances to seal the deal and Thoi (Singhs) one was very easy too. It was a dirty game. We had to do these tactical fouls to slow their pace. It was a risk playing Esmael (Goncalves) against Jakub (Sylvestr). I thought this was the time to make changes. Esmael had been out for a long time and I decided to gamble. He has shown that he can score at the right time.

OFC head coach Stuart Baxter: We made a few mistakes in the first half. We played well in the second round and the last 10 minutes was about throwing the sink on it. We had too many games in a short time. (Diego) Mauricio had a tight calf and (Jacob) Tratt was suspended. Jerry (Mawihmingthanga) wasn’t quite fit either. We set out to share the burden between our attackers. That’s why we made four changes. It wasn’t that Marcelinho was bad, but he was deep in midfield. When his confidence fell he wasn’t up to date. So we hired Mauricio, who did well. Those were very bad destinations to give away. Our defense panicked a bit and we had to pay for it. I am disappointed with the end result. However, I know my players are taking off their socks and hopefully come back stronger next time.

Chennaiyin FC are finally winning again after four games, including three draws and one loss. Esmael Goncalves was the star of the night when he scored a double in just six minutes in the first half minute.

Odisha FC, on the other hand, looked rusty for most of the game. Diego Mauricio was clearly missed in the first 45 minutes and he reduced his team’s deficit with a wonderful goal later.

Both teams missed several clear chances during the game. It was Stuart Baxter’s OFC who suffered in the end when he went down for the seventh time this season while Csaba Laszlos CFC came out on top.

90 3 ‘CORNER FOR ODISHA! This could be the final roll of the die for OFC. Vinit Rai will take over the set piece. His cross into the penalty area / Olympic goal attempt leads the ball over the crossbar. Goal kick for Chennaiyin FC!

90 ‘After a four-minute break at the end of the second half! Odisha captain Steven Taylor is booked for a faulty duel against CFC star Anirudh Thapa. Chennai is trying to waste some time here. OFC head coach Stuart Baxter argues with the fourth official on the sidelines.

87 ‘CHANGE! Finally, CFC striker Jakub Sylvestr replaces Indian striker Rahim Ali. Manager Laszlo looks nervous on the sidelines as his team tries again and again to stay at the top.

84 ‘ANOTHER CHENNAI CHANCE! Again Odisha lost the ball badly in midfield. But this time midfielder Cole Alexander went back in time to get the ball out of CFC’s memo Moura.

81 ‘What a mistake! This should have been Chennaiyin FC’s third goal. Odisha skipper Steven Taylor slipped on the left wing and CFC winger Lallianzuala Chhangte took advantage of it as he advanced at pace. He escaped two opposing defenders and put Thoi Singh in the penalty area. But Thoi missed the target from close range by a large margin. This was a great chance for Chennai to seal the deal.

78 ‘SUBSTITUTION! Baxter decides to bring in fresh legs. Indian winger Nandhakumar Sekar replaces tired Kamalpreet Singh in the middle.

74 ‘Free kick for ODISHA! Onwu is overthrown by Enes Spiovic in midfield. Vinit Rai takes the free kick, but the Chennai defense clears the ball away with ease.

71 ‘YELLOW CARD! Forward Rahim Ali is the second Chennai player to be booked tonight. He brings down Odisha striker Manuel Onwu from behind and is punished by the referee.

69 ‘ANOTHER CFC CHANGE! Indian midfielder Thoi Singh replaces foreign recruit Fatkhulo Fatkhulloev in the middle for Chennaiyin FC. Odisha FC have dominated possession for the last few minutes.

66 ‘REPLACEMENT! Chennaiyin FC manager Csaba Laszlo makes his first change of the night. He replaces top scorer Esmael Goncalves with defender Deepak Tangri on the field.

63 ‘GOOOOAAAAALLLLL !!!! DIEGO MAURICIO SCORES !!! ODISHA FC 1 – 2 CHENNAIYIN FC !! Midfielder Cole Alexander headed a ricochet at Mauricio. The striker received the ball and made a rapid run. He is defending on both sides but he managed to get the ball into the right corner of the post to withdraw a goal for his side. Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith’s sight was blocked by his own defender.

60 ‘CORNER FOR CFC! Lallianzuala Chhangte makes a quick run on the left flank. He evades a Vinit Rai device and reaches the edge of the box. But his shot is deflected for a set piece. Chennai is unable to capitalize on the corner.

57 ‘BOOK IT! Two yellow cards from the referee within five minutes. This time it’s a CFC player. Jerry Lalrinzuala writes a silly tackle against Odisha FC’s Shubham Sarangi in the referee’s book.

55 ‘FOUL! Diego Mauricio pulls Memo Moura down by the back of his shirt. The referee does not book the Odisha FC player. Chennaiyin FC wins a free kick.

52 ‘YELLOW CARD! Odisha FC defender Shubham Sarangi is the first player to be booked tonight. His wrong tackle against an opposing player earns him a card.

50 ‘CHFC-CHANCE! Chennaiyin FC winger Lallianzuala Chhangte runs forward to find Esmael Goncalves near the penalty area. But the striker cannot control the ball as it goes out of play for an Odisha goalkick.

47 ‘DOUBLE CHANGE FOR OFC! Manager Stuart Baxter brings Daniel Lalhlimpuia and Diego Mauricio into the middle for Jerry Mawihmingthanga and Marcelinho.

Meanwhile, Manuel Onwu had a great opportunity to retract one for OFC, but his bad run continued when he missed a slight chance . It’s time to get Diego Mauricio now and Marcelinho misses too.

Odisha FC are struggling to gain a foothold here. Chennaiyin FC dominated the first half thanks to one man – Esmael Goncalves. The CFC striker could even have scored a hat trick in the first 45 minutes.

45 2 ‘FOUL! Kamalpreet Singh defeats Jerry Lalrinzuala from behind. He’s lucky enough to flee here without a card. One last CFC free kick in this half. Anirudh Thapa receives a short pass and attempts a shot from far, but misses the target by a large margin.

45 ‘Two minutes of added time at the end of the first half! Chennaiyin FC win a throw-in in the final third. Lallianzuala Chhangte receives the ball but is quickly expropriated by Hendry Antonay when Odisha FC regains possession.

43 ‘Free kick for Chenien! This is much closer to the goal than what OFC won just moments ago. Fatkhulo Fatkhulloev will take it. He also sends the ball over the post. Another bad set piece.

40 ‘Free kick for ODISHA! Marcelinho will take over the standard situation. He sends the cross into the box, but he gives the ball too much power as it sails over the bar. Bad stuff from the experienced Brazilian.

37 ‘What a chance! Odisha FC should have scored there. Manuel Onwu with the missing tournament. Jerry Mawihmingthanga came to the ball after a poor game. He improvised and took the overhead kick to set Onwu in the box. But the Spanish striker shot the ball well ahead of Chennai keeper Vishal Kaith.

34 ‘CHANCE! Chennaiyin FC continue to put pressure on Odisha FC here. Memo Moura takes the ball forward from midfield and lets you fly from a distance. But he can’t hit the target.

29 ‘ODISHA CHANCE! Manuel Onwu takes the ball forward. He performs a one-two with Marcelinho and tries to enter the pits. The defense of Chennaiyin FC reacts to the clearance in good time.

26 ‘CORNER FOR OFC! Finally a set piece for the Kalinga Warriors. Jerry Mawihmingthanga will take it. Shubham Sarangi is on the receiving end of the corner but his header is wide.

24 ‘Chennaiyin FC are two-goal ahead for the first time this season. This is a well deserved one. OFC must invite Diego Mauricio as soon as possible. The team is currently lacking creativity.

21 ‘GOOOOAAAALLLLLLL !!!!!! ESMAEL SCORES AGAIN !!!!! CHENNAIYIN FC 2 – 0 ODISHA FC !!! Esmael Goncalves packs a dounle in just six minutes. He ran slowly towards the ball, took a short break and made the OFC keeper Arshdeep Singh 2-0 for CFC.

20 ‘PENALTY FOR CHENNAIYIN FC !!! Odisha FC’s Gaurav Bora brings CFC midfielder Anirudh Thapa into the penalty area and the referee points to the point.

15 ‘GOALLLLLLL !!!!!!! ESMAEL SCORES !!!!!!!! CHENNAIYIN FC 1 – 0 ODISHA FC !!! A long ball is played towards Esmael Goncalves. OFC’s Gaurav Bora tries to intercept it, but his touch is weak. Esmael gets the ricochet and runs fatally forward. He was one on one with Odisha keeper Arshdeep and found the back of the net with a dink.

12 ‘Chennaiyin FC have dominated attack and passing statistics in this game so far. The team could even have taken the lead early on. Odisha FC is clearly on the rear foot.

9 ‘CORNER FOR CHENNAI! Reagan Singh wins a free kick for his team. Hendry Antonay with the finishing touches. Fatkhulloev crosses the ball into the penalty area and Enes Sipovic tries to reach it. But the ball had too much power because it went out of play.

7 ‘TACKLE! Goncalves with another run in the final third. But Kamalpreet comes to Odisha with a well-timed glider on the edge of the box. Brilliant!

5 ‘What a chance! This has been CFC’s problem all season. The strikers couldn’t end their chances. Esmael Goncalves received a good pass from Fatkhulo Fatkhulloev on the right. He moved the ball forward at a rapid pace. He stepped into the box and was in a good position to score, but his shot went way over the bar.

2 ‘Throw for CFC! Lallianzuala Chhangte annoyed Odisha FC defender early on. The Chennaiyin FC left winger can’t get past his marker in the end.

7:20 p.m .: Odisha made four changes tonight – Marcelinho, Manuel Onwu, Shubham Sarangi and Kamalpreet Singh have Jacob Tratt, Daniel Lahlimpuia, Nandhakumar Sekar and Diego Mauricio replaced. Since then, Chennaiyin has only made one change – Esmael Goncalves for Jakub Sylvestr.

The seventh edition of the Indian Super League began on November 20th in a bio-bubble in Goa.

During the four-month tournament, eleven teams will play against each other in a league and playoff format at three venues . After the inclusion of SC East Bengal, 115 games will be played this season, compared to 95 last season.

After a dreary goalless draw on Sunday, Chennaiyin FC and Odisha FC will meet again on Wednesday at the GMC Stadium.

At halftime CFC only has 11 points, while Odisha is at the bottom of the table with only six points. Both teams need a win to be able to fight for the playoff spot.

Despite finishing eighth in the points table, CFC would feel that all is not lost, considering that only four points put him off third Place Hyderbad FC separate.

Stuart Baxter, Odisha FC coach, said his team could make some changes to keep the opposition informed.

« It’s a possibility, yes, if you have these double heads. Sometimes you change tactics. But we have to look at a new group of players; we have to look at the injuries. We have a suspension in Jacob (Tratt ). So that’s on the table, « said Baxter.

For CFC coach Csaba Laszlo, the problem of strikers taking advantage of relatively easy chances is still his main problem.

» I don’t want to say that we created most of the chances in the league but somehow we didn’t score enough goals. If you don’t score, it’s very difficult to win games, « said Laszlo.

» You can’t always just defend and expect to be clear behind. We’re organized at the back, but I wish we could score with the opportunities we create, ”he added.
