Always professional, Max George of The Wanted is sure to smile when he tries to impress the judges on Strictly Come Dancing

But behind his whimsical footwork hides excruciating grief as his teammate and ‘brother’ Tom Parker faces a diagnosis of terminal brain cancer

For five years, the guys were joined at the hip, traveling the world and scoring blow after blow with the boyband created to rival One Direction

It was Tom’s pregnant wife, Kelsey, who called Max to tell him about the tragic diagnosis so her husband didn’t have to relive it over and over again

And that was something Max – who is engaged to Ryan Gigg’s ex Stacey – had never expected to hear in a million years

Tom, 32, said OK! magazine: « Obviously all the boys were as shocked as we are. They’re gutted by the news, but they’ve been incredibly supportive

« Max was there last week Siva and Nathan obviously live much further away, but the four boys have regularly texted and sent different articles and possible treatments and therapies that they all read »

When Tom and Max finally chatted, it was deeply moving as they both tried to make sense of the situation

Tom continued: « When I spoke to Max he was in pieces We were in pieces together »

Kelsey is due to give birth to their second child next month while Tom undergoes intensive chemotherapy and radiation therapy in an effort to reduce the mass and give him more time with his beloved family

The first sign of trouble came in July when Tom thought he had suffered a seizure He said OK! magazine that he was alone at the time so wasn’t sure

He had back pain and a mark on his head and felt like he had suffered a concussion, and a second trip to A&E saw him put on the waiting list for an MRI

In the meantime, Tom, Kelsey and their 15-month-old daughter Aurelia went on vacation to Norwich, but while there he suffered a second seizure and had an immediate MRI

After four days of testing, Tom received the news he never imagined hearing, and because of Covid, he had to deal with it alone

He had stage four glioblastoma – an aggressive form of brain cancer – and it was terminal

Tom told the magazine: “They pulled the curtain around my bed and said, ‘It’s a brain tumor’ All I could think of was, ‘F ***** g hell! ‘I was shocked It was a lot to deal with on my own I still haven’t dealt with it «

Kelsey added: « It was horrible They called me and told me on the phone They said, ‘It’s a tumor and it’s the worst case’ They also told us that it was inoperable and what the treatment would be I was in complete condition My friend Kelsey was with me and she just said, ‘Don’t pass out It was like everything had stopped Obviously, being told that you have a tumor is bad, but being told you have the worst is a lot to take All I could think of was, ‘What’s going to happen and what’s our life like now?’ «

Heartbreakingly, the disease has an average life expectancy of three to 18 months from diagnosis

However, Kelsey told Tom’s brother – who went to the hospital in his stead – not to let the doctors tell him how long he was gone because he would «  count the days and not live his life. life  »

On top of that, the couple have been in contact with many people who only had months to live but are still alive five years later

And one person convinced Tom will recover is his Max, who took to Instagram to praise his teammate’s ‘courage’

He wrote: « It is obviously a devastating and frightening time but for those who do not know Tom I will say this

« There is nothing he has never given up on and never accepted a response to. His heart is the size of a lion, and it is his drive and passion that has always driven The Wanted and made sure we were treated well

« Speaking as a brother, friend and bandmate I know you will overcome this as you have all the other challenges you have been through We are all on this path together and I can’t wait to get back on stage with you and the boys and have a good party when you are better

« You got that my man I love you, Kels and the whole family with all my heart and I will be here »

And as Kelsey and Tom face one of the most heart-wrenching chapters of their lives, they both can’t wait to enjoy some slight relief in the form of Max on Strictly – especially given the previous success. of their teammate Jay McGuiness in the series

Tom added: « Max has a lot to go through Jay was mean, but Max can turn him on I think he will be surprisingly good »
