A man was killed in a shark attack on the northwest coast of Western Australia.

The incident occurred on Cable Beach in Broome, the popular tourist destination of the Kimberley region, around 8 a.m.. 45:00 local time (12. 45 p.m. GMT).

WA Police said the man was rescued from the water and treated by local police before the St. John Ambulance arrived.

« Tragically the man died as a result of his injuries, » said a WA police spokesman.

Associated Press reported that officials shot the shark, which « lingered near the coast for almost half an hour after the attack ». .

« The type of shark was not immediately confirmed, but locals told reporters it could be a tiger shark that is sometimes drawn close to shore by schools of small fish, » AP said.

Gene Pears, Kimberley County Police Inspector, said the victim was bodyboarding about 30 to 40 meters from the beach when she was attacked.

A couple on the beach saw it hit the water and hurried to get the man to safety. He sustained leg and hand injuries, AP reported.

« It’s a tragic incident, very unexpected, a person going out to have some fun in the water, » said Insp. Pears said.

The attack occurred around 0. 9 miles (1. 3 miles north of Cable Beach Surf Club, the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development announced on the government’s SharkSmart website.

The Broome Shire rangers worked with government departments, including the Fisheries Department, to close the beaches in the area to the public – from Coconut Wells to Streeter’s Jetty.

« People are being told to stay out of the water and not travel to the beaches, » warned the Shire.

« The decision was made in consultation and in partnership with the Department of Fisheries and other relevant stakeholders. «

Broome is a popular vacation destination – especially with international visitors. But WA’s strict border restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic have made it a perfect option for Western Australians seeking refuge within the state.

The man’s death comes after Andrew Sharpe was fatally attacked by a shark in Wylie Bay, Western Australia in October.

The 2020 death toll from shark attacks is the highest in Australia since 1929, when nine people died.

« The introduction of shark nets on popular beaches in the 1930s resulted in a significant decrease in fatal attacks, » said AP.
