An « accidental » miracle cure for multiple sclerosis could emerge from the horrors of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scientists who developed a hugely successful sting for the coronavirus found that the same vaccine mRNA also improved MS symptoms in animal studies and prevented the disease from progressing in rodents that showed early signs of MS.

The results have « excited » a leading Australian MS researcher who hopes future research will provide similar protection in people with the debilitating disease.

There are over 25,600 people with multiple sclerosis in Australia, over 3,970 of them in Queensland. It is a lifelong disease with no cure. It attacks the central nervous system – the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves, and the progression, severity, and specific symptoms of MS cannot be predicted.

The German company BioNTech has supplied a COVID-19 vaccine whose effectiveness is unparalleled and which is being introduced in the USA and the EU.

« While this is an interesting study, it is early-stage research in the laboratory. In people with MS, we don’t know exactly which components of the brain and spinal cord the immune system targets. So a specific ‘vaccine’ is being developed – was not possible This research is exciting because the « vaccine » has been shown to dampen the immune response against additional components of the brain and spinal cord that are involved in autoimmune reactions in MS.  »

« This is an encouraging early finding and we hope that future research will investigate whether similar protection could be induced in people with MS, » she said.

BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin, MD Ph.D., has led new research and, along with his team, hypothesized that an mRNA vaccine could specifically help the immune system to tolerate certain MS-related proteins without impair normal immune function. Existing treatments suppress the immune system, but can leave patients open to infection. More than 60 percent of patients are using disease-modifying therapy.
