The fire was in the vegetation near the great dome, an iconic image visible from campus, said a firefighter.
« Right now it’s medium fuel and a rapid rate of spread, « said Firefighter Jason Nailon of the fire.

There are no classes on campus, Nailon said. He added there had been a report of what appeared to be homeless in the area when the fire was discovered.
Several fire departments helped fight the fire, including crews from neighboring Vista and Escondido. According to SoCal Air Operations, four air tankers and two helicopters are associated with the incident.

According to a tweet from the National Weather Service in San Diego, the winds in the area are relatively weak, the humidity is currently below 20 percent and the temperatures are in the high 80s. « Elevated fire weather conditions will last all day, » the agency said in the tweet.
